CLARISSA SMITH & SIMCOE HYPNOSIS & WELLNESS OFFER 1-ON-1 AND GROUP MENTAL HEALTH COACHING TO PROFESSIONAL ATHLETES AIDING IN IMPROVED PERFORMANCE ON AND OFF THE ICE

SIMCOE, ON – March 5th, 2022 Clinical Hypnotherapist & Mental Health Coach, Clarissa Smith, joins the OJHL’s Aurora Tigers Jr. A Hockey Team to offer mental health coaching & support to these professional athletes and their families. Providing 1-on-1 support to all team members & loved ones, along with bi-weekly team building & mental health workshops, Clarissa aims at making a positive impact to these athlete’s quality of life, both on and off the ice.

“When I met former NHL player & Mental Health Advocate, Jim Thomson, and was asked to join the Aurora Tigers, I had never been more excited about an opportunity. I was given the chance to positively impact a group of professional athletes, and I am beyond thrilled to see just how much it is helping their overall well-being,” said Clarissa. “Grateful does not even begin to describe how I feel”

"When I met former NHL player & Mental Health Advocate, Jim Thomson, and was asked to join the Aurora Tigers, I had never been more excited about an opportunity."

“Being a professional athlete comes with an incredible amount of pressure, which can be debilitating for many and send them into a negative spiral of self-doubt, impacting their sports performance and life satisfaction. These pressures are not only external, but internal as well. They hold themselves in high regard and want to be the player that puts up the most points, gets a scholarship, or the coaches are proud of.” Says Clarissa. “I assist the players in managing these pressures, and building a positive sense of self so their performance does not waiver based on the points they put on the board. This is then translated into how they approach life as a whole, improving their overall mental state of being. When they feel good, it shows in their on-ice performance as well”

“I have seen a drastic improvement in their overall on-ice performance after our workshops, typically resulting in back-to-back wins."

“I offer 1-on-1 sessions where the players can meet with me confidentially and discuss anything they are going through in life, finding new resources or ways of managing their emotions.” Said Clarissa. “I also visit the team bi-weekly and host a workshop where I teach them about many different aspects of mental health, our mind & body connection, and helpful resources for managing stress”

“During our workshops, my goal is to create an open and safe space where they can each share their experiences or thoughts, aiding in building a strong & connected team. If they feel like a team off the ice, that translates to being a team on the ice.” Said Clarissa. “I have seen a drastic improvement in their overall on-ice performance after our workshops, typically resulting in back-to-back wins.” Clarissa mentioned. “I have also implemented different strategies for the Tigers to use before and during games as a reminder of their need to come together and work as a team, which have gotten an incredible amount of positive feedback from the players & owner, and it shows in their performance.”
